Description: Original concert program for a April 1, 1952 performance by the ATLANTA SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA with HENRY SOPKIN, Conductor at the Municipal Auditorium. It featured the ATLANTA MUSIC CLUB commissioned WORLD PREMIERE of ATLANTA from composer, DON GILLIS who worked with Toscanini at the NBC SYMPHONY. From Georgia State University Archives: Mr. Gillis has told of his amazement, upon arriving here for the rehearsals and performance, at being squired around downtown by proud boosters and shown store windows decorated with concert posters and pages from his score. Then the Sunday newspaper came out with a special section about the great occasion — printed, he says, in magnolia-scented ink! The premiere, at the last concert of the season, helped cement the ASO permanently in the civic mind as a thriving cultural institution. The program has 48 pages including a heavier matte finish cover with shiny non-matte finish pages that measure about 6 x 9 inches. It provides the performance details along with numerous local interest ads. VG condition - see description. We ship programs in a Stay-Flat mailer with one corrugated cardboard pad.
