APOLLO 17 GEOLOGY OF TAURUS LITTROW Complete Report 280pp ALL 9 PLATES NASA

Description: RARE COLLECTIBLE APOLLO ITEM!! STILL IN ORIGINAL SHRINK WRAP!!This is USGS Professional Paper 1080, The Geologic Investigation of the Taurus-Littrow Valley: Apollo 17 Landing Site. Published in 1981, this is one of only a few scarce publications the USGS did on behalf of NASA in connection with the Apollo program. This publication consists of a 280-page book and a separate case containing the 9 accompanying plates. This scarce publication is entirely complete with nothing missing, and is even still in the original plastic shrink wrap. This publication contains an extensive treatment of the traverse geology and samples, as well as a geologic synthesis. The book goes station by station with the objective, general observations, sometimes provides a geologic discussion on the station, and provides a summary of sampling for each station where samples were taken. To give you a better idea of the contents, here is a list of the plates accompanying the volume: Plate 1: Geologic Map of the Taurus-Littrow Area 1:250,000Plate 2: Detailed Geologic Map of the Apollo 17 Landing Site 1:25,000. This map shows the actual landing site plus the paths of the traverses.Plates 3-9: Apollo 17 panoramas showing sample localities and features identified. The panoramas come with schematic diagrams identifying the features within the panoramas. There are 29 separate panoramas shown on these 7 plates. See the photos for an idea of what these panorama sheets look like, and for a close up of part of the schematic diagrams. This is some really good stuff that will keep you engaged for hours as you work through the traverse locations, the book, and these panoramas and accompanying schematic diagrams Note that these geologic maps are different than the Apollo 17 Pre-mission geologic maps that were published in 1972. These are more up to date, show a closer scale (1:250,000 and 1:25,000 as opposed to 1:250,000 and 1:50,000 in the 1972 set.) and they show the traverses. The 1:250,000 map even shows more area than the 1972 map. This report gave me more perspective on the lunar missions than I ever had before. The astronauts worked incredibly hard while they were on the moon and accomplished a tremendous amount. This book is as much a tribute to their hard work as it is a compilation of what was learned from it. The photographs really contributed to my understanding of the mission and made me proud of all the great men and women that worked so hard to make it all possible. The pictures include many of outcrops and partially buried boulders as well as some pictures showing various pieces of the astronauts’ equipment. The softcover book is printed on high quality paper. The maps and plates are huge and are in excellent condition. The case that holds them is in great shape, with only minute amounts of damage from a long shelf life somewhere. I mention these details for the sake of completeness, as I don’t think the condition could be regarded as anything less than excellent. The condition is impressive given its age of over 30 years. All in all this is a very scarce and highly desirable treatise on the Apollo 17 site and would make a tremendous addition to any Apollo program collection. The photos above show: 1: Large area map of the landing site, with landing site shown.2: Map case3: Smaller area, closer up map of the landing area with the landing site shown, and a .4: Text5: Close-up of the smaller area map shown in picture 36: The seven panorama plates.7-9: A panorama plate and three close-ups from it.10-13: A panorama plate and two close-ups from it.Note that the maps and panoramas in this set are unique to this item. There is no other way to get these maps than with this report.Condition: The map case is starting to split along the front hinge line toward the top. This is typical of most of these reports and happened because the map case is too big for the enclosed maps, so when they were stacked six-deep in the original USGS boxes, they got gradually crushed by the ones above them. Even the ones on the top suffered damage because in their original wrappers, the text was on top of the map case. Some are better, some are worse, but all of them show some damage of this type. This one is better than most and is priced accordingly. I have listed one with worse splitting at a lower price. Please read all the condition notes.Expert packing assured.
