Description: This is a rare antique African wooden food bowl called atubwa which was made and used by the African Turkana Tribe, located in northwestern Kenya, Africa. This antique tribally used food container called atubwa by the Turkana was made by the women of the tribe to hold food, camel and or cow milk and this specimen has worn through hole in the bottom which was tribally repaired long ago with handmade aluminum sheet metal and handmade aluminum rivets. This antique Turkana atubwa food bowl combines function and artistry of the female carver which is the hallmark of the Turkana people. This atubwa bowl like all atubwa bowls has a rounded bottom to keep the bowl from tipping over on the sand floor of the Turkana house to prevent spilling but this bowl does stand upright on it's own. The outside of the bowl is decorated with carved dots and has an intentionally burnt decoration around the outer rim. These bowls are usually masterfully carved so that the growth rings of the tree trunk are visible which adds to the rustic beauty of the bowl. Good rustic antique tribally made and used condition with tribal repaired hole, wear, a lot of surface patina and dirt (almost like being seasoned) and was used to carry and store food and milk, this antique vessel has an old tribal milk and fire smell that some people might find strong or objectionable but others might enjoy (I personally enjoy the smell). This Turkana bowl measures 8 inches long across the top, 4.50 inches tall and 5 inches wide. This bowl has been left how I received it and has not been cleaned. As nomads, the Turkana of northern Kenya produce very few articles which are not functional. Turkana tribal people make items which are usable, easily transportable and made of materials that are readily available in their harsh desert homeland. The Turkana are a Nilotic people native to the Turkana County in northwest Kenya, a semi-arid climate region bordering Lake Turkana. They are mainly semi-nomadic pastoralists who also practice light small game hunting. The Turkana are noted for raising camels and weaving baskets. In their oral traditions, they designate themselves the people of the grey bull, after the Zebu, the domestication of which played an important role in their history. This specimen is very desirable and would make a fine addition to any African culture collector's treasure trove.
