Description: This is a lovely Antique Sumatran Betel Box Holder (Celapa) with Gold Inlay. The ornate primary container is attached to the smaller Lime paste holder with looped silver chain mail. The piece was purchased by my expatriate father in the 1970's in Penang, Malaysia during the period he owned an Antique Shop on the island. The piece itself can be attributed to the Minangkabau the largest ethnic group on the island of Sumatra who are well know for their elaborate metalwork. He only purchased from reputable local Antique Dealers and especially enjoyed Malay / Indonesian Silver pieces. I estimate the age of this piece dates to the later part of the 19th Century. Please refer to all pictures in regards to the Condition of this item. Please refer to a wonderful reference guide written by Michael Backman in the U.K. called" Malay Silver & Gold - Courtly Splendor from Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei & Thailand" This recently published book goes into great detail regarding the creation of this type of silver.
