Description: Up for your consideration is an Antique Stevens "1776 - 1876" Centennial Cast Iron Cap Gun made in 1876 S1.1.1 with a three star rating for rarity as described in the book Cast Iron Toy Guns and Capshooters by Samuel H. Logan and Charles W. Best. Description The Stevens "1776 - 1876" is a single shot single action capshooter. There are two that are almost exactly the same and they are identified as S1.1.1 and S1.1.2 in the book Cast Iron Toy Guns and Capshooters by Samuel H. Logan and Charles W. Best. The only difference between the two is the size. This one is the smaller of the two by 1/2 of an inch. It is 4.75 inches in length. The grip that has 1876 on it looks like it was repaired, but it is a factory imperfection. I know this because I took this cap gun apart to fix it. It had no hammer retention. The last 4 pictures shows this area of the cap gun and the last picture shows the inside of the grip. If someone did that kind of repair I would like to meet this person to shake his hand, but I can't believe that anyone could repair cast iron and leave absolutely no trace of a repair on the inside. What I did to this cap gun As I said, this cap gun had no hammer retention so I drilled out the pins to take it apart. The two springs were fine, so I was able to reuse them, but the step on the hammer section was rounded over so it wouldn't catch. I took a jewelers file and made the step deeper, and that worked well. The holding pins did not go all the way through which made this repair a bit more difficult. I ground the pins down to the posts and brazed the new pins in place. Then I put it all back together, cut the pins with about a 1/4 inch exposed. Then I melted the pins with a torch as I tapped the molten steel with a hammer then filed it flat. Then I peened all around the edges so it doesn't feel rough when you run your fingers over the pins. So now it works very well, and if it's not abused it will last for many years to come. This is a toy cap gun. It cannot be altered to shoot any type of projectile. Guaranteed Authentic! If you are not completely satisfied with this purchase you can return it for a full refund with absolutely no hassle! This replica gun contains the colored markings required by law, including a permanently attached orange plug.
