Description: This is a Spanish silver round snuff or pill box with cast hinged lid sculpted with a relief scene depicting an idyllic rural scene with a man and woman sharing assorted fruits amongst the shrubbery - he appears to be handing her a flower and there is a small dog at her feet. The interior is bright gold gilded and it is very solidly made. It measures app. 4.9cm diameter x 1.5cm deep and weighs app 43.8 grams. It is stamped with a Spanish silver mark of a 5-pointed star in an oval surround as well as another stamp which may indicate the maker or the town of manufacture. The Spanish regulations of 1934 require the official legal standard quality of silver to be at least '915' (slightly less than Sterling) - but prior to that time there was no official standard so many items were of lower grades. This particular example tests out as fairly high quality and probably dates from the late 19th century. It is in excellent condition with some very slight wear to the prominent features of the design.
