Description: Antique Print after Albrecht Durer – Samson Rending the Lion. Dürer probably executed this large woodcut as a pendant to Hercules Conquering the Molionide Twins, which is comparable in size and subject. In his slaying of a lion with his bare hands, and as a symbol of physical courage, the Old Testament hero Samson is the Christian counterpart of Hercules. Dürer’s technical virtuosity is illustrated in the remarkable gradations of tone and texture achieved in such details as the lion’s luxuriant mane, aptly described by scholar Erwin Panofsky as "fireworks in black and white."
