Description: Antique Pair Bronze Lion of Lucerne Bookends HELVETIORUM FIDEI AC VIRTUTI Pair Bronze Lion Bookends 'Dying Lion of Lucern' This is a stunning pair of bronze bookends, depicting the 'Lion of Lucerne' (also known as the Lion Monument). These bookends are inscribed: 'HELVETIORUM FIDEI AC VIRTUTI' - "To the Loyalty and Courage of the Swiss". These bookends are patterned after the original design by Danish artist Bertel Thorvaldsen, who erected a monument to the Swiss by carving this regal lion out of natural rock in 1821. The Lion of Lucerne was to commemorate the Swiss Guards who lost their lives in 1792 during the French Revolution. Bookends are extremely well-rendered and heavy, and are in very good antique condition. Each bookend measures approx. 7 1/2" X 7 1/8" X 5 1/4" (LXWXH) and each weighs 3 lbs. 10 oz. eachFront Inscription in CAPs: HELVETIORUM FIDEI AC VIRTUTIBack Label: JB 1570
