Description: ARTIST: Poul Steffensen is a well-listed Danish artist, whose works have been offered at auctions (f.ex. Christie’s and Bruun Rasmussen) multiple times and who was a regular exhibitor at the famous Charlottenborg. He graduated from the Royal academy of Art in Copenhagen in 1890 and was a student of famous Danish artists Frederik Vermehren, Julius Exner and Carl Bloch. He mostly painted landscapes with farm animals and/or people. In the beginning of the 20th century he also became a popular illustrator of books. PAINTING: Oil on canvas. The painting is an absolutely stunning rendering of a young farm boy driving out the cows to their pastures. In the background one can see the thatched farmhouse, which an inscription on the back of the frame identifies as Marius Olsen’s farmhouse, with many remarkable little details such as the flowering garden, the laundry hung out to dry and to the right chickens playing on the dung heap. The boy carries a hammer, which was used to hammer down poles to which the cows were tied. Although there are so many wonderful aspects in this wonderful painting, my personal favorite part of it is the remarkable life-like way the cows have been rendered. On the back of the frame are 2 inscriptions. The first reads: “Boelsmand Marius Olsens hjem. Siim mark Ry St. Sommeren 1919”. This means “Farmer Marius Olsen’s home. Siim field – Ry Station. The summer of 1919”. Boelsmand is a word used for a farmer, who owns a relatively small homestead. Ry station is a railway station built in 1871 in an area called Siim mark, so this settlement is probably close to that. Ry is located in the Eastern part of Jutland – not too far from Århus. The other inscription reads “Køerne trækkes ud efter middagen”, which is the title of the painting: “Pulling the cows out after supper”. The painting is dated to the summer of 1919. Signed: “Poul Steffensen” in the lower right corner. SIZE: With frame: 89,5 cm/35.2" * 71,5 cm/28.1". Without frame: 68 cm/26.8” * 50 cm/19.7". CONDITION: The painting is in great ready-to-hang condition - no holes, tears or missing paint. The frame has scratches and stains.
