Antique Oil Painting Charming Continental Coastal Scene SAMUEL PROUT 1783-1852 Click images to enlarge Description Quality Oil Painting Continental Coastal Scene Circle SAMUEL PROUT 1783-1852 A beautiful period oil painting, this one bearing an inscription to the frame for the famous British painter Samuel Prout. Prout was one of the masters of British watercolour and architectural painting. He secured the position of Painter in Water-Colours in Ordinary to King George IV in 1829 and afterwards to Queen Victoria. John Ruskin, whose work often emulated Prout's, wrote in 1844, "Sometimes I tire of Turner, but never of Prout". Age- c1820 Size- 15 by 19 inches approx including frame, canvas 11 by 15 inches approx. Medium- Oils on canvas Condition- Generally decent, we would be pleased to hang this as found. Some varnish browning and thinner paint areas. Extensive craqueleur and separation visible, a little uneveness to the canvas surface. Frame- Old wooden frame, some knocks, offered free with the painting. Signature- Appears unsigned, old inscription to the frame.
