Description: This listing is for the Springfield Daily Republican for June 19, 1861. It is a regular daily edition, so it was 4 pages; two pages of news with lots of Civil War news, and 2 pages of ads. It is really tiny print. I am old, and I had to put on my magnifying glasses to read it, lol. It is in excellent condition - there is a lot of rag in the paper, and not a lot of acid. The reason that later papers are much more browned and fragile is that later on in the Victorian era publishers realized that they could make paper much cheaper by using less rag and adding acid. No one, at the time, cared if the papers lasted or not. If you are interested in what the Civil War must have been like for day to day people, this paper will be of interest. I Ihave other copies of other days of this particular paper, including a Saturday edition that has 8 pages. This one makes note of Jefferson Davis and his cohorts being outcasts forever; their treason will never be forgiven (hm!) There is a group of men in prison that regularly drill for the front, at their own request. "The government has discovered a trap set in Fairfax...". Lots of amazing stuff, miniutia, as well as general war stuff.
