Born Karl Friedrich Peter Berthold Woltze, son of artist Berthold Woltze (1829-1896), Peter Woltze studied in Weimar, Karlsruhe, Munich, Venice, and Rome. Peter Woltze lived in the United States from 1882 to 1900 though he spent some of that time in Mexico. He was primarily a watercolor artist who specialized in street scenes and architectural studies. He is also known to have done some portraits, notably a watercolor portrait of Henry Vianden in 1882. This painting and two others are in the Milwaukee Art Museum's collection. He studied with Fredrick Wilhelm Heine in Milwaukee and worked on panorama paintings for the American Panorama Company in 1886. While in the United States, Woltze was a member of the Salmagundi Club of New York, an important art club that held regular exhibitions and formed its own art collection. After returning to Germany at the turn of the century, he lived for several years in Frankfurt am Main before settling in Weimar. A color portfolio of Woltze's watercolor views of historical buildings in Weimar was published in Germany in 1907. He remained in Weimar until his death in 1925.
