These pendants are typically from the South of France and were popular in the mid-19th century in Digne-les-Bains and Antibes. Our medallion is extremely rare as it features a West Indian theme, with beautiful ships, exotic flowers and an opulent & alluring creole? woman on the reverse side. Starting in the 18th century, Marseille and other costal cities in Provence developed trading activities in the Mediterranean and important trade routes to the West Indies, sugar being one of the most important imports to France from the Antilles.
