Description: Late 18th Century French Industrial Engraving Description and Item Information Up for sale is this antique French engraving from the Encyclopedia by Denis Diderot (1713-1784) and Jean le Rond d'Alembert (1717-1783). Please excuse any glare in the photos. This print illustrates late eighteenth century textile carders and their tools. The print paper has two straight edges and two rag edges. It is mounted at the upper left corner in a paperboard folder with a cellophane window; it was also mounted at the upper right corner, but this has come loose. The print paper measures approximately 12 inches by 9 1/16 inches. The folder measures approximately 14 inches by 11 inches. This would be a good addition to a collection of European industrial prints. Identification There is a Davidson Galleries (Mercer Island, Washington) label affixed verso on the folder which says, "DIDEROT and D'ALEMBERT France, circa 1713-1784 Textile Trade Engraving for Diderot Encyclopedia, 1780 58-41-93 $10.00." "58-41-93 $10" is also written in pencil on the print paper. The print itself has the following markings, "Pl 4," "Attelier du Cardier, Ustensiles et Outils," "Benard direxit," and, "13." This engraving, which shows the tools and workshop of textile carders, was produced under the supervision of Robert Benard for the Diderot and d'Alembert Encyclopedia. Benard (1734-1777) was a French engraver, and he supplied over 1,800 plates for the Encyclopedia. This print is from an estate collection; the previous owner was actively acquiring art during the 1970s and 1980s, but the date of purchase from Davidson Galleries is not known. Condition This print is unframed. The print paper has two straight edges and two rag edges. It is mounted at the upper left corner in a paperboard folder with a cellophane window; it was also mounted at the upper right corner, but this has come loose. The print paper has some scattered, small stains, but most of this could be covered by framing. The folder has some edge creases and very minor marks. Please review the photos, and ask any necessary questions prior to bidding or buying. Terms of Sale 1. Payments Taxes may be applicable. The correct shipping address must be included with payment.
