He was also known as Yagohachi and Tōu. Born: 1670 in Tsuruoka Castle town, Tagawa District, Dewa Province (present-day Yamagata Prefecture) Born to: Tsuchiya Chūzaemon, a samurai of the Shōnai Domain Career highlights: Studied under Satō Chinkyu In 1703, became a student of Nara Tatsumasa in Edo During the Shōtoku era, was employed by Lord Matsudaira Yoritada of Moriyama Domain with a stipend for twenty people During the Kyōhō era, left his position and opened his own workshop in Kanda, Edo Died in 1744 The piece described features an openwork (sukashi) design of a rain dragon (雨龍, uryū), which was a popular motif in sword fittings, particularly tsuba (sword guards).
