Description: Item: circa 1860 oil painting depicting a grist mill in the mountains and 3 young men, probably fishing but maybe looking for gold in the rock lined river. I like this painting because it’s an oil on paper in the Hudson River School manner and that makes me think of Albert Bierstadt, who did paintings of old mills, dark landscapes, and specialized in mountain scenery. It’s hard to thoroughly evaluate the painting at hand or even know if it’s signed because it’s so filthy dirty, but I know the quality is quite good on this one. Background: Many Hudson River School painters were European immigrants (the founder of the “school” Thomas Cole from England, William and James Hart from Scotland, Bierstadt from Germany, etc.), so their style was European and traditional. What differentiates them from artists that never moved to the USA in the 1800’s is that they did scenes like this where they showed man’s encounter with nature, far away mountain scenes that most people could only see in pictures (the American West), and the element of industry (like a grist mill) in nature as we progress out of the American ‘wilderness’ to an industrial society. It’s like man’s impact on nature and these kinds of themes. Note: Unframed 11 1/4 x 15 3/8 inch painting. Oil on paper is filthy dirty and needs cleaning. The paper, which is a bit malformed (doesn’t lay flat) has tears near edges, a tiny hole, and pieces missing at corners. The painting has paint loss, craquelure, spots, etc. PLEASE SEE MY OTHER EBAY LISTINGS FOR A NICE SELECTION OF ART, ANTIQUES, AND COLLECTIBLES!
