Description: The following description is our “best guess” on the item after extensive research on its origin as it is unbranded and has no markings to definitively confirm the following: Antique Burmese Hammered Repousse Solid Silver Betel Box. Believe this item to date back several years (maybe early 1900s) to areas in Asia. A Betel Box is/was used to store the areca nut (sometimes known as the betel nut) which would be wrapped in a betel leaf with lime paste and other ingredients, often tobacco, for chewing. While we have not “tested” the item as silver, every indication is present that it is in that it is very soft (bendable) and the inside remains very “bright” as it has not been exposed to elements leading to the tarnish (natural patina) look on the outside. The hand-hammered design throughout the box is exquisite and so detailed - reflective of Asian culture. The twine-like silver chain has a few hook options leading to a few various ways this item could be carried. It is in excellent condition with no noticed flaws (aside from a few bends on edges from the “delicate” metal. A rare and unique piece that is sure to add charm and conversation to your display. Please view all photos as they are a part of the description and accurately reflect the condition of the item. Happy to answer any questions you may have prior to purchasing.
