Each frame holds three bronzed brown glazed tiles depicting a lady and a man dressed in medieval clothing. The woman’s gaze is demurely cast downward while the man serenades on a lute.An early twentieth century catalog shows the fireplace tiles as patterns 419 and 420.The tiles measure 6” on each side and are marked in the mold with raised AE letters.The vintage wooden frame of the lady measures 9 3/8” in width and 21 3/8” in height. The frame of the man measures 9 1/2” in width and 21 3/16” in height. The framed tiles weigh 5 pounds and 5 pounds 3.8 ounces.The framed tiles are in very good unused condition. The American Encaustic Tiling Company Limited was founded in 1875 in New York City. Production of glazed tiles began in 1880 and embossed tiles in 1882. By 1890 the company was the largest producer of tile in the world and by 1892 a factory was opened in Zanesville, Ohio. Production continued until 1935. In 1937, the company reopened as Shawnee Pottery.
