Description: Antique, 19th century unframed oil painting on wood panel with label verso from Lancaster, which is the ‘county town’ of Lancashire in England and where Hudson River School founder Thomas Cole was from. This painting appears to be unsigned, so it wouldn't be classified as a Cole. Since it's from Lancaster or at least has a label from there (probably per a past picture framing job), an auction house would likely catalog the painting as British School or English School. I don't think anyone would disagree with that. The area the painting was in, in England, combined with the fact that I found it in the Philadelphia area, makes me relate it to Thomas Cole, who was in both places. The label on the back is just an indicator that the painting was, at one time, in Cole's neck of the woods. It was here in the Philly area, too. This is why I say it's a 'British and/or American' artist. Many people from England settled here in America.I think of this painting as School of Thomas Cole because that's narrowing it down to who I believe was the most influential painter from the Lancaster, England area. That's just what I think, and it wouldn't change the fact that an auction house would likely just catalog this item as English School. Because they're so expensive, I'll surely never own a 'certified Thomas Cole'. I see a painting like this as the closest I can get. Every picture tells a story. This one tells us it was in the area of England where Thomas Cole was from. The reason why I find paintings like this in the Philadelphia area is that some painters from Lancashire such as Cole and George Fryer came to Philadelphia, as families from their hometown settled here. It may be because of the Quaker connection: Lancaster Friends Meeting in England is the longest continual Quaker meeting site in the world, and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania is the “Quaker City”.As is often the case way back when, standard size paintings weren’t spot on in terms of the measurements. This painting’s wood panel measures approx. 7 7/8 x 9 7/8 inches, but it’ll fit in most 8 x 10” frames anyway.I saw a 7.88 x 10” oil on board by Thomas Cole on Askart. The painting offered here measures about the same. Cole painted a good number of oils on panel and in various sizes. His paintings depict scenes on the Thames, Arno, Kenilworth Castle, places in Italy like Mount Etna, etc. Cole’s peopled landscapes are landscapes that contain a quasi genre scene, such as “Hunters in a Landscape” (depicts two figures on a country road by the water). These things such as size, artists materials, etc., may all be coincidences. But, they also support my thought about how the painting relates to Cole. If an auction cataloged a painting like this as British School or English School, I'd think they're in effect saying it's a 'mystery artist'. And, that's fine, but it's also fine for anyone to think of known artists from England and see about in what ways the painting may or may not relate to them. People do that all the time with Old Master paintings. The painting offered here surfaced near my town in NJ, just 20 minutes from Philly. It's uncleaned & has paint losses from flaking that will require maybe two percent fill and touch-in. The losses seem to correspond to slightly raised areas where there are also cracks in the paint.I prefer to sell paintings in their raw state because I believe knowledgeable collectors value that. If anyone here is just starting out, I'd be happy to recommend art conservators I know who are respected in the trade.
