Description: This fascinating and beautifully carved Javanese Kris handle features what could only be described as a mythical creature. His face has some of the features of a elephant with a short trunk-like nose but he has human arms and legs and appears to be dressed in fabric or an animal skin skirt. He also has an elaborate necklace and head dress perhaps featuring leaves. To further enchant the figure, he has a birdlike face level with his back. The figure looks almost Polynesian with its totem or tiki like elements. The carving is very skillfully done and has the patina of something frequently handled and much loved. I think it dates to the mid-19th c. or perhaps earlier. It has an old metal ferrule at its base. The handle comes with a weighted black painted metal stand.(modern). It is 5" long x 1 1/4" wide x 2" deep (at the head) and is carved from a tropical wood with the color of walnut but much denser. Stock Number SA2C-302
