LAOS OR NORTH VIETNAM. Description of Item Antique 1950's Hand Crochet Afghan Been stored in family cedar chest for years. Roughly 40" x 48" Heavy I am not sure of material but based on the weight of this I guessing woolAm I 100% sure? Not really.Yet it is really soft to me. I know we use to raise raise sheep and a limited number of Morino Sheep. The thing I remember about the Morino Sheep in our case were extremely social and would come right up to us.We could let them in the yard to eat and they would follow us right back into the field without issues.The other sheep were social with other sheep but not quite friendly enough to come up to us for the most part.I did have one pet sheep called "Suzie". She would actually play foot ball with me. Believe it or not.She would follow me all around the yard all day. I hand bottled her and she was very tame.Enough with that.I know that some of the wool would be sold and some kept. I know that Grandma had two spinning wheelsa large one and a smaller one and would sometimes spin her own yarn.I am not sure if this is from that or not. Just saying is all. My Grandmother was gifted at Crochet Work & Old Quilting MethodsFor spare money but moreso for enjoyment she actually taught Crochet and QuiltingI think in part to be around ladies of her own age She would spend the days before her classes making cookies for it. I am guessing she made this in one of her Crochet Class?Why do I say this?She would blend multiple colors in a design pattern to not waste material used in making things."Waste Not Want Not" she always said and having been in the depression is another reason.You will note the central white color boxes in this patternNow look at the greens. There are two different random colors of green which was commonfor those she made in her teaching class. Some areas around the white boxes are a dark greenothers are like a lime green. With no real rhyme nor reason to it that I see. That would make this a one of a kind I assume. Do not get me wrong it looks very sharp and nice. When she made them for gifts they all matched with uniform coloring throughout. I find nothing really wrong with this other than what is pictures as a small loose Crochet areaprobably from use as a Throw over the sofa back. I remember this being used for that.If I am missing anything else I am not seeing it and it would not be intentional. My Grandmother liked Crochet's items as she said if something let loose or neededfixing, it was easy to fix Crochet items.Therefore that small area that let loose I am going to assume is an easy fix. One thing you will note with you get this. It is heavy and very thick in my view. Yes this is family and part of history. Why am I selling this then.However being raised in olden ways I guess you could sayIt does no good unless it is used. I am keeping some other family pieces that mean a lot to me for one reason or another.It is time for others to get use and perhaps even enjoyment of of it. Old magazines, books, publications, booklets and manuals may come with wear, age spots & page discoloration. Some may have a slight age or other odor from aging. It's a natural process. I collect or have collected many Vintage items over the years and I personally feel this adds to their character, charm and shows that the background and history of the pieces as being authentically old and thus making them more in demand, collectable and desirable to those that enjoy and/or collect them. Remember that even a vintage item in really good condition is old and it may not function as well as when it was originally made. Plastic type and other items can change color and/or weaken over time because of light, pollutants, heat, humidity and other items in the air. So if you intend on using a Vintage item, please be aware of this, and be careful. We can not control how you use them. They may be more subject to breaking just because of the fact they are old. Yet other items were made better back then, then similar items made today, so you alone have to make your decision to buy and item or not.
