Description: For your consideration is an amazing and extremely detailed antique, 19th century carved wood sculpture of the Buddhist deity, Chakrasamvara, embracing his consort, the goddess, Vajravarahi. This is a work of art that would have also been used in tantric rituals and meditation practices. I've definitely seen pieces like this is museums, so I had it evaluated, authenticated and appraised by Mearto, a reputable appraisal company for antiques and fine art, and they provided the following information: "Based on the images and information you provided, this item is: A 1890s, remarkable, handcrafted and hand-painted wood sculpture depicting Chakrasamvara and Vajravarahi and showcases a profound representation of Buddhist tantric deities in the Vajrayana tradition, with reminiscences of Kangxi style. Chakrasamvara, often depicted in union with Vajravarahi, embodies the enlightened union of wisdom and compassion. The sculpture's significance lies in its portrayal of Chakrasamvara, a male deity, in embrace with Vajravarahi, a female deity. This union symbolizes the integration of wisdom and skillful means on the path to enlightenment. The artistic rendering, likely influenced by traditional iconography, captures the intricate details and symbolism associated with these deities. As a representation of Buddhist iconography, a Chakrasamvara and Vajravarahi wood sculpture serves as a tangible expression of spiritual ideals within the Vajrayana tradition, adding both aesthetic and cultural value to the artwork." I have also provided a screenshot of the appraisal specialist's opinion in the photos section of this listing (see last photo). The sculpture remains in very good condition considering its age and the unusual fact that it is made of wood vs. metal, indicative of it being well kept. It appears to have been mounted in or sitting in something else early on (possibly a wall niche) based on the difference in color around the base. No signatures or markings are present, but my guess is that this piece is likely from Tibet or India. Measurements: 9 1/2" wide x 3" deep x 17 1/2" tall. Weight is approximately 5 lbs. 6 1/2 oz.
