Description: Antique 17th-19th Century Chinese Spectacles (eyeglasses) Bronze or brass, with crystal lenses, horn or tortoise shell rims. The metal pivet pin lets the lenses rotate. When the lenses are folded together they form a magnifying lens. When they are open they form eyeglasses. The clamps holding the lenses are in good working order. The small headrest is used to hold the lenses in the correct angle for reading . The frames are very well made and in very good condition for there age. (17h -19th century) The case is made of hardwood covered with dark red lacquer, inlaid bronze flowers are decorative but are also rivets holding the hinge on the lid. Red symbolizes good fortune, happiness and joy. The case still has it's red silk cords and beads. I am not a expert on gems so I will tell you what I think they are. The dark red bead is Garnet, the green is Jade, blue is Lapis and the orange/yellow one Amber. These semi precious gem were used in China and when they tried to put spiritual powers in to all things they made. They could be colored glass. The case has a working hinge and silk cords. The silk fabric lining is missing. If it was there it would be a replacement. I'm an amateur collector, for 45 years, and am old and selling my optical antiques.
