ITEM DESCRIPTION: Here is an Absolutely Beautiful Vintage Circa Mid-Late 1960s Original SIGNED Oil on Burlap Painting of an Untitled Architectural Landscape & Marine View of ‘Italian Roman Ruins with People, Buildings & Bay’, by the listed painter, ‘Angelo De Momi’ (Italian, 1905-aft.1968), whose signature, appears lower-right in the corner. Please see brief artist biography below. And we currently have another De Momi original painting available, so please have a look! About the Painting & Art Dealer(s): Walter Meibohm took regular art-buying trips to Europe every year from the 1950s to the early 1980s, buying art directly from various dealers and artists, and shipping the artwork back to sell here in the States. Walter purchased this painting circa mid-late 1960s, most likely from the well-known art dealer Ranzini S.R.L. Produzioni Artistiche in Milan, Italy (Artistic Productions [now Foto Ranzini], 1876-Present) where he had purchased many other De Momi works from around the same time period, that we’ve sold over the years. To the best of my research, the company’s history can be traced back through the Ranzini family to include the renowned international printing company of brothers, Primo & Ernesto Ranzini (Printers & Typographers, 1876-c.1943) who started their business on Corso Ticinese in Milan in 1876. The company later moved to Viale Corsica, 20 in Milan in 1927 and the company also came to manufacture ceramics for domestic and ornamental uses, made frames as well as also sold paintings, pictures and miniatures. The son of Ernesto Ranzini, Pompeo Ranzini had been affiliated early on with the S.A. Ranzini Ernesto company circa 1939 and during WWII, the company was bombed and destroyed. Circa 1941, Pompeo Ranzini opened his own art gallery called Galleria Ranzini located at Via Brera, N.4, Milan, Italy (AKA Galleria P. Ranzini, c.1940’s-c.1980s) where he represented many well-known artists and held regular exhibitions for artists such as, Pietro Annigoni (1910-1988), Giovanni Lomi (1899-1969), Alessandro Lupo (1876-1953), Carlo Bisi (1890-1982) with whom he was good friends with, Mario Donizetti (1932-) and many others. In addition to supporting the artists by selling their paintings, sometimes Pompeo would offer them advances or give them financial support out of his own pocket during difficult times. He was also known for taking on some bad business partners that put his gallery at risk, but the gallery managed to continue into circa the 1980s. In 1954, other family members, Gianni & Augusto Ranzini, had decided to resurrect the Ernesto Ranzini company from the ashes of WWII and founded their company called Ranzini S.R.L. Produzioni Artistiche, and by 1957 they transferred their new headquarters to Via Moretto da Brescia, 22 in Milan. The company name later changed to Foto Ranzini S.r.l. which is still in business in Milan today offering designers, advertising agencies, fitters, companies, architects and artists a full 360° service in the field of visual communication to include: Digital and fine art prints (on every type of support and format), exhibitors, POP materials, backlight, display systems for prints, digital packaging and much more. Our Painting is oil on burlap which is tacked to the stretcher frame and is in the Italian veduta style of cityscapes & vistas, similar to painters such as, Francesco Lazzaro Guardi (Italian, 1712-1793) and Giovanni Antonio Canaletto (Italian, 1697-1768). The Painting features a dark paint glaze antique patina that the artist rubbed in by hand over the surface of the painting, to give the piece an ‘Old World’ look & feel to make it look older than it really is, and then was varnished (which typically has yellowed somewhat from age) and gives a nice added warmth to the piece. Brief Artist Bio: Angelo De Momi (Italian, 1905-aft.1968) was born in 1905 in Mestre, Venice (Veneto), Italy and studied art and painting restoration at the Accademia di Belle Arti, Venezia (Academy of Fine Arts of Venice, or Galleria dell’Accademia for short). He had many successful exhibitions and won several awards for his paintings, garnering critical acclaim by critics and the public alike. De Momi is primarily known for his Venetian scenes to include canal scenes, vista views, cityscapes/architectural buildings, harbor scenes, classical architectural ruins, and landscapes with villages. De Momi was inspired by painters from the late 15th Century Venetian School in the veduta style (Italian for: View) of cityscapes or vistas, painters such as, Francesco Lazzaro Guardi (Italian, 1712-1793) and Giovanni Antonio Canaletto (Italian, 1697-1768). Many of De Momi’s works reflect the veduta style and some of his paintings have an antiqued patina (darker paint glaze rub) applied to the surface to give the pieces an old world look & feel to them, making them look older than they really are. His paintings were represented by the well-known art company and dealers, Ranzini S.R.L. Produzioni Artistiche in Milan, Italy (Artistic Productions [now Foto Ranzini Srl], 1876-Present). He typically would only sign his last name on his paintings as, ‘De Momi’. (Written by Mark Strong of Meibohm Fine Arts, Inc., East Aurora, NY, meibohmfinearts site, from sources: Our internal records) Size & Condition: The size of the painting is 15-3/4” x 19-5/8”. The Painting is in Fair-Good Rare++ condition for its vintage age with beautiful rich color! There is a vertical canvas flaw (canvas crease) on the right side of the painting going top-to-bottom, which was there to begin with when the artist initially painted the piece (he painted over it) and there is slight vertical paint craquelure on the crease itself, but we had stretched & framed it to sell here in our art gallery way back in the 1960s (frame since removed & painting was stored since then)—hence the lower starting price… There is other slight & tiny paint craquelure over the rest of the surface of the painting, which was typical for De Momi’s paintings that we’ve seen and sold over the years, and believe it was part of his above-mentioned style, to make the pieces look older than they are. There is a little paint flaking spot (about 3/8 x 3/8” area) on the top edge middle-right which could easily be touched up with new paint, and most of which could easily be covered by the inner rabbet edge of a frame, as well as some other tiny edge chips here & there which are negligible & easily covered by the rabbet edge of a frame. No other damage at all on the piece aside from maybe a little unevenly applied varnish that the artist initially did in the lower corners, as well as a few topical surface scuff/scratches here & there with a little associated rub- wear. This vintage original oil painting will make a great addition to any De Momi, Italian or Roman art collection and will look gorgeous all framed-up! We have had numerous problems in the past communicating with our eBayers outside of eBay because of it. COLLECTORS & DEALERS: Please DO NOT email us (inside or outside of eBay's email system) with any offers to stop an auction early. It would not be fair to the rest of the eBay Worldwide community if we did that. THE HIGHEST BIDDER -OR- HIGHEST OFFER WINS IT!!!!!
