About the Corinthian Order The Corinthian order is the last developed of the three principal classical orders of ancient Greek and Roman architecture. The other two are the Doric order which was the earliest, followed by the Ionic order. The Corinthian order is named for the Greek city-state of Corinth, to which it was connected in the period. However, according to the architectural historian Vitruvius, the column was created by the sculptor Callimachus, probably an Athenian, who drew acanthus leaves growing around a votive basket. Its earliest use can be traced back to the Late Classical Period (430–323 BC). About Alabaster Alabaster is derived from Greek "ἀλάβαστρος" ("alabastros") or "ἀλάβαστος" ("alabastos"), both used to denote a vase of alabaster, it is a translucent rock with similar properties to marble and it has been used for centuries for statuary, carvings, and other ornaments. Alabaster is processed to form a thin powder which is then mixed with resins and other components to provide high quality art products and decorative items with fine detail and a very smooth finish. Please note that the item listed in this page is a hand finished, high quality, alabaster cast.
