Description: DESCRIPTIONThe United States Mint American Women Quarters™ Program is a four-year series celebrating the accomplishments and contributions made by prominent women of the United States. Beginning in 2022, and continuing through 2025, the Mint is issuing five new quarters each year featuring reverse designs honoring prominent American women. The new quarters honor a diverse group of notable American women who made significant contributions in a variety of fields, including suffrage, civil rights, abolition, government, humanities, science, space, and the arts. The women honored are from ethnically, racially, and geographically diverse backgrounds.Wilma Mankiller is featured on the third coin released in this program.Wilma Mankiller was the first woman elected chief of the Cherokee Nation. Mankiller’s administration revitalized the Cherokee Nation through extensive community development, including improvements to health care and education. Mankiller’s leadership on social and financial issues made her tribe a national role model. After leaving office, she remained a strong voice worldwide for social justice, native people, and women. In her 1993 autobiography, she said she wanted to be remembered for emphasizing that Cherokee values can help solve contemporary problems. Mankiller received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1998.The reverse (tails) design depicts Wilma Mankiller with a resolute gaze to the future. The wind is at her back, and she is wrapped in a traditional shawl. To her left is the seven-pointed star of the Cherokee Nation. It was designed by United States Mint Artistic Infusion Program Designer Benjamin Sowards and sculpted by United States Mint Medallic Artist Phebe Hemphill. The inscriptions are “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “QUARTER DOLLAR,” “WILMA MANKILLER,” “PRINCIPAL CHIEF” and the name of the Cherokee Nation written in the Cherokee syllabary. The common obverse (heads) depicts a portrait of George Washington. This design was originally composed and sculpted by Laura Gardin Fraser as a candidate entry for the 1932 quarter, which honored the bicentennial of George Washington’s birth. Inscriptions are “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “2022.”This American Women Quarters Two-Roll Set™ – Wilma Mankiller contains single rolls of 40 uncirculated coins each, for a total of 80 coins in each set.
