It produces black or purple berries that are great for jams and jellies, and also for wildlife. It has light gray or brown bark and is arching in form. Produces attractive flowers and berries all season long. Flattened panicles of small white flowers are produced in midsummer.This native species can even tolerate low wet areas that others cannot. Elderberry fruit makes incredible juice that has wonderful flavor and are very high in Vitamin C. Berries make a wonderful cough syrup. Its juice is also used in wine-making. Fruit set improved when more than one cultivar is used. This plant is a showy ornamental ideal for the garden. The American Elderberry has a fast growth rate. Be sure to give it lots of room if planted in rich garden soil. It has bright green foliage and grows in full sun to part shade in moist, garden soil. Elderberry is self-fertile and, while it requires no other to bear fruit, planting 2 or more ensures a more abundant harvest. When needed, prune in late winter to desired shape and size.
