This American Elderberry, Sambucus canadensis, is a native deciduous, upright shrub. It produces black or purple berries that are great for jams and jellies, and also for wildlife. It has light gray or brown bark and is arching in form. Produces attractive flowers and berries all season long. Flattened panicles of small white flowers are produced in midsummer.This native species can even tolerate low wet areas that others cannot. Elderberry fruit makes incredible juice that has wonderful flavor and are very high in Vitamin C. Berries make a wonderful cough syrup. Its juice is also used in wine-making.
