Description: Carle Hodge drew heavily upon - and was enormously indebted to - the three-volume Ecology of the Saguaro, by Warren F. Steenbergh and Charles H. Lowe. These are publications of the National Park Service. Indian uses of saguaros are summarized by Frank S. Crosswhite, then-director of the Bioyce Thompson Southwestern Arboretum near Superior, Arizona. Also in this issue is an excellent bibliograph on saguaro ethnobotany by Bernard L. Fontana. Papago Indian Religion, a 1946 book by ethnologist Ruth M. Underhill, provided the Tohono O'odham saguaro-growing song, and the story of the boy who wanted to hurl a rock at a saguaro fruit came from Gary Paul Nabhan. A bibliography by Phyllis Morgan of Tucson led to some unfamiliar sources. We also relied on the scientific report of (and in some cases interviews with) Stanley M. Alcor, Roger L. Caldwell, Arhtur Bi Gibson, James Rodney Hastings, Paul Hendricks, Karl E. Korak, and many others. Alcorn, Fonatna, Olin, Turner, and Van Devender reviewed all or parts of the manuscript, as did George N. Knecht. This book is part of a large collection from the estate of an avid collector. This book has been carefully stored.
