The handwritten fragment dates from Hamilton's time as a lawyer in New York City. We believe this to relate to a case where Hamilton served as counsel to a ship master. An armed American ship carrying unspecified contraband was seized by the French, and the ship's Master attempted to take back the vessel. The underwriter of the ship attempted to avoid payment stating that the insurance did not cover the contraband. An excellent piece of handwriting from the same hand that helped draft the constitution and wrote America's financial structure into existence.
