Description: Albert Schweitzer Out of my Life and Thought: An Autobiography Henry Holt and Co 1957 10th printing From the Jacket: This is the remarkable life-story of one of the world's truly great men. Already famous at the age of thirty as musician, philosopher, and theologian, Albert Schweitzer decided to become a doctor and to devote his life healing the sick and suffering among native African tribes. He abandoned a brilliant career in Europe to found a hospital in Lambaréné at the edge of the primeval jungle. He has not only labored at his self-sacrificing task, but he has continued with his other interests as well-keeping up his organ technique on a specially equipped piano; writing a series of deeply perceptive books; giving lectures and recitals all over Europe to raise funds for his hospital. Of Albert Schweitzer's autobiography Karl Reiland, Rector Emeritus of St. George's Church, New York, has said: "You will not easily lay this book aside. You cannot read it without being fascinated by the matter and becoming an admirer of the man....You will find Albert Schweitzer the university professor and lecturer; the musician, playing organ recitals in London and Paris and Berlin; the doctor among his patients in Strasbourg and Africa; the preacher and pastor; the author, writing epoch-making books on Jesus and Paul, on philosophy, on Johann Sebastian Bach and his music; the expert on organ construc- tion; the authority on comparative religions. Was there ever such a capable, versatile, ubiquitous, and altogether human and companionable giant among men? Yet how humble and with what a sense of humor!" ... OUT OF MY LIFE AND THOUGHT was first published in 1933. It was at once recognized as an inspiring autobiography, but it has only recently begun to reach the wide popular audience which it so richly deserves. The present volume has been completely redesigned and reset; the translation has been partially revised; and a postscript by Everett Skillings, close friend of Dr. Schweitzer and chairman of The Albert Schweitzer Fellowship, has been added to bring Schweitzer's story up to date. Jacket Illustration by Ann King Good: The book does not look new and has been read but is in excellent condition.
