OTOMO: The Complete Works Vol. 12 contains the first volume (of eight) of the AKIRA series, which collects the first 14 episodes (up to page 279 of the first volume of the collected editions) as they were originally published in Young Magazine during its second year of publication, when Katsuhiro Otomo was 28-29 years old in 1982-1983. This historically significant work, which had a tremendous impact on the manga world, is renowned for its high level of completion. However, it is less well-known that Otomo significantly polished and revised the work when it was compiled into collected editions. Enhancements were made through various means: additional drawings, corrections, deletions, replacements, rearrangements of pages and panels, further refinement, and newly drawn content. This process led to the definitive version of AKIRA, which has continued to be read for 40 years since its initial release. One well-known fact is that the title pages for each episode were removed in the collected editions. However, in this Complete Works version, the series is published in a "serialized version" format, with everything restored to its original state as much as possible, including the title pages, following the concept of arranging the artist's works chronologically to trace how he evolved as a creator. The aim was to restore the work to its pre-collected edition state, before any revisions were made for the book release. Some parts could not be fully restored to their serialized state due to the loss of the original artwork or direct corrections made to the manuscripts, but the mission of the Complete Works version was to return to "as close to the original state as possible." This "LIVE serialized version of AKIRA" that has not been seen since its original publication is distinctly different from the "completed version of AKIRA" read in the collected editions and perfectly recreates the excitement of its initial release!
