Description: *** Two Book Set: Pre-Soviet Invasion! " Afghanistan, Land in Transition ". by Mary Bradley Watkins. SVan Nostrand, USA. Printed in Pennsylvania. Hardcover, DJ 267 pages, English. ~~Excellent book showing Afghanistan as a land in the process of unifying it's many native people. Covers cultural elements since destroyed by subsequent invasions and religious cleansings. Includes pictures of Afghanistan's king, local people and landscape, and discusses diverse tribal cultures. Shows this nation in the early 1960's as modernity was just beginning to overtake cities, and rural life was still largely untouched by invasions and the foreign violence and ideas of the Soviets, Taliban, and unfortunately we Americans (whatever the intent). See Photos 2-13 " Pakistan, Birth and Growth of a Muslim Nation ". by Richard V. Weekes. Van Nostrand, USA. Printed in Pennsylvania. Hardcover, DJ 278 pages, English. ~~This book was written only 17 years after Pakistan gained independence from British india. It is a nice book for placing this young independent nation in its early context. Excellent descriptions of traditional life of average people in villages, little touched by modernity. See Photos 14-24 These are good books which aim to present the people and cultures of Afghanistan and neighboring Pakistan in their historical and cultural contexts. These books are aims at the adult reading level, although any young person doing research into these nations and their people would find this information fascinating. Although they're published in the 1960's, the information on history and culture is timeless. Both books include decent selections of Black & white photographs showing everyone from national leaders to villagers going about their daily tasks. Discusses the impacts made by modernity, and some of the ensuing struggles. I will be putting up a number of books on Muslim culture & Islamic and Sufi religion, Buddhist philosophy, Hindu philosophy, Buddhism, Buddhist thought, mysticism, magick, Martial arts, Karate, Kung-Fu, and the occasional odd fun subject.
