Civil War-dated partly-printed vellum document signed by, “Abraham Lincoln,” as President appointing Louis Ernst Crone a, “Second Lieutenant in the Veteran Reserve Corps.” CIVIL WAR-DATED MILITARY APPOINTMENT SIGNED BY ABRAHAM LINCOLN AS PRESIDENT APPOINTING LOUIS ERNST CRONE A SECOND LIEUTENANT IN THE VETERAN RESERVE CORPS Crone (1826-1891) fought as a first lieutenant with the 22nd Massachusetts Infantry Regiment. Although he was badly wounded, losing his left arm and injuring his left foot, at the Battle of Gaines’ Mill in Hanover County, Virginia on June 27, 1862, he continued to actively serve in the unit until President Lincoln (1809-1865) promoted him to the 17th Veteran Reserve Corps Infantry Regiment on August 1, 1864. PRESIDENT LINCOLN PROMOTES A UNION OFFICER BADLY WOUNDED AT THE BATTLE OF GAINES’ MILL Countersigned by Secretary of War Edwin Stanton, contains one page with a green seal affixed near the top left corner, measures 18.5 by 14.5 inches, created in Washington, DC, in very fine condition with fading to the handwriting, and nicely matted and framed to an overall size of 24.5 by 20.5 inches.
