Description: James Hunter CBE (born 1948) is a historian of the Highlands and Islands of Scotland, who has held academic posts at Aberdeen University and UHI. He has also been director of the Scottish Crofters Union (1985–1990), Chairman of the Isle of Eigg Heritage Trust (2004–2007) and Chairman of Highlands and Islands Enterprise (1998–2004), the Inverness-based development and training agency for the North of Scotland. He was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 2007. Hunter is now a freelance historian and author, and has written thirteen books on the Highlands and Islands and its global diaspora. In this book, he traces the role of the Scottish Highlandsin the development of the United States and Canada, partly but not exclusively as a result of the Highland Clearances about which he separates fact from myth. For the origin of the title, see photo 2. This volume will be a delight to North Americans of Scottish extraction (though if you are thinking of it as a gift, be aware that it is a second-hand book). For every sale made, Billowness Books donates 50p to a literacy charity: Book Aid International; Books Abroad; or the World Literacy Foundation.
