Description: Ships in plastic between cardboard in a stamped envelope Reverse side text 986 A. - Art Chrtien. Catacombes. Catacombs. Originally, the catacombs were abandoned careers. The first Christians, suspected, persecuted, found themselves there, not to live there as we often believe, but to exercise worship and make their burials without exciting hatred latent. We saw immense galleries there, forming several floors. On the sides of these galleries spread the sepul- tures, consisting of "locululi" or oblong niches dug in the tuf and sealed by marble plates. In the catacombs we meet small primitive buildings, partly built, partly underground. The plan of these churches (we Can already give them this name) were very varied. In fact, they represent the very first manifestations of Christian art. From an architectural point of view, they cannot have a very great interest, spiritually, they are the testimonies moving from a heroic thought, of a truly fidelity supernatural, Maison d'Art, 15, rue du Midi, Bruxelles.
