He attended Ohio Wesleyan University for two years, taught school, read law in Xenia, spent one year at Cincinnati Law College, and was admitted to the bar in 1874. He practiced law in Washington Court House, 1874-76, and in Jamestown from 1876 until his death. He also operated extensive farms. He wrote many poems on rural themes. He was, according to "Au Revoir," a document located in the Greene County Archives, known as the "poet laureate" of the Greene County Bar.
