Description: You are looking at a ticket stub for the game between the Boston Red Sox and Oakland Athletics which took place on August 19, 1999 at Fenway Park. Pedro Martinez was in the middle of one of the greatest seasons ever for a pitcher. He would earn the pitching triple crown and posted absurd numbers versus the league average in the liv-est of live ball eras. This game would be the first of a streak of eight straight games where Pedro struck out at least 11 batters. However, on this date, Pedro yelled at Red Sox General Manager Dan Duquette prior to the game for what Martinez perceived as the Red Sox front office trying to figure out if Pedro was going to follow the Red Sox' internal rules. The words from Pedro were a bit puzzling and more fully described below. Here is an account of the game from AP that captures the argument between Duquette and Pedro: "The post game scenes were as puzzling as Pedro Martinez’s real feelings. At times, Pedro Martinez was laughing with reporters about his pregame tantrum and acting like he wasn’t upset at all. At other times, it was clear the Red Sox ace was still angry that he was punished for showing up late to his previous start. Even in the clubhouse, the Red Sox ace can change speeds with the best of them. "I should ask all of you about your families, how you all get along," Boston manager Jimy Williams said Thursday night about his recently dysfunctional clubhouse. "I’m concerned about the feelings of those people out there. I really am. We'll do what we think is right." Hours after pitching a fit at Red Sox general manager Dan Duquette, Martinez struck out 11 Oakland batters in seven innings. But he couldn’t match Tim Hudson, who allowed four hits in eight innings to lead the Oakland Athletics to a 6-2 victory over the Boston Red Sox. “I always like pitching in big games. You want to turn it up a notch," Hudson said. I knew I had to match Pedro pitch for pitch. Hudson (8-1) allowed just one earned run and struck out seven to win his sixth consecutive decision. The A's rookie was also 4-0 in Triple-A and 3-0 at Double-A Midland, making him a combined 15-1 this season. T.J. Mathews got two outs with two on in the ninth to earn his third save and pull Oakland within one game of Boston in the AL wild-card race. "We are extremely happy leaving here with a split, especially going against Pedro tonight." A's manager Art Howe said. But we always feel confident with Tim Hudson on the mound. Martinez (17-4) was scratched from Saturday's start when he arrived about 30 minutes before the game, breaking a team rule that requires players to be at the ballpark two hours early. He has stewed about the incident all week, demanding an apology from Williams for not keeping the matter private. Before Thursday's game, he yelled at Duquette, “Are you here to see if I’m here two hours before the game? Well I am. OK?” Martinez then went out and struck out the first four Oakland batters, including Matt Stairs leading off the second. In all. he allowed three runs on seven hits and walked none. Stairs said he could tell Martinez was angry. "You could see it in his eyes and the way he threw the ball," said the A's outfielder, who struck out three times. But after the game, Martinez joked around and insisted he was not angry at Duquette or Williams. “Jimy just made a statement. He said, 'If Pedro's not allowed to do it, nobody else is. That's not just to me, that's to the whole team." Martinez said. “I'm a man about it. I made a mistake.” Later Martinez admitted he was angry, but only because cameras were waiting to record his arrival. “You guys need to let it go,” he joked to reporters. “The clubhouse is my house. If you sneak into my house and I don't know who you are. I'll shoot you.” Oakland led 2-0 before the Red Sox tied it in the fifth on Reggie Jefferson's homer and Trot Nixon's RBI triple. But with two outs in the sixth, Miguel Tejada homered into the screen above the Green Monster for a 3-2 lead. John Jaha hit a two-run pinch single in the eighth to make it 5-2. Eric Chavez doubled and scored on Rich Becker's single in the ninth. It was the 12th time this season that Martinez has struck out 10 or more batters, tying the club record set by Roger Clemens in 1988. It was also the 47th time in Martinez' career he has done it."
