Description: This handmade artwork depicts 6 of the carved heads that adorn the coffered ceiling of the "Envoys' Hall" at the beautiful historic Wawel Castle in Kraków, Poland. They depict people of different classes from kings to courtiers. Each molded clay head sculpture is painted white and mounted in a black wood shadowbox frame. The head of the woman in a bonnet with a wimple covering her mouth is the most famous of the Wawel heads. She owes her fame to a popular legend according to which she is said to have spoken to King Sigismund Augustus, exercising his judgment with the words: Rex Auguste iudica iuste (Latin: King Augustus, judge fairly). Her bonnet with a characteristic band on the lips, interpreted as a symbol (or order) of silence, is actually an example of 16th century fashion. Dimensions: 14.5" X 3" X 1.1" Great vintage condition for this artwork made in mid-20th century. Minor signs of normal wear consistent with age shown in photos.
