Эта традиция восходит корнями к чрезвычайно богатой исторической литературе сасанидов, которая в свою очередь уходит корнями в мифы и легенды, отражающие исторические представления иранских народов. Исторический свод истории Ирана - "Хватав-намак" (Книга владык) был составлен в VII веке при последнем сасанидском шаханшахе. На основании арабских переводов "Хватав-намак" независимо друг от друга были составлены четыре персидских свода "Шахнаме" (так переводится на язык фарси "Хватав-намак"). Кроме "Шахнаме" Фирдоуси, ни один из вариантов "Книги владык" не дошел до нашего времени.
