If you switch them you'll just get beeping to let you know it's wrong.The connector nearest the wider end of the L-shaped "smart adaptor" is #2; the other is #1. Looking at the bottom face of the display card, with the ribbon cables going away from you (so the encoder, buzzer, and reset switch are to your right), the left socket is #1, and the right socket is #2.
