Description: VTG MCM VERNON KILNS California BLEND NO. 1 GALE TURNBULL Salad Plates Set 3 VERY RARE, circa 1938 pattern was designed by Mr. Gale Turnbull & features a hand painted yellow & brown spiral decor; none are exactly the same. All 3 are in very good vintage condition--no chips, cracks visible. There are very few utensil marks from use. Fun fact: Daniel Gale Turnbull Jr., was an American ceramicist, painter, etcher, and art director active from the 1920s until the 1950s. He is best known for his work as art director and designer at Vernon Kilns beginning in 1936. A painter and engraver by trade, Turnbull worked at Leigh Potteries and Sebring Ohio prior to coming to California. Under Turnbull’s guidance, Vernon began offering a huge spectrum of designs and patterns. Not only is he credited with the design of the Ultra shape, but produced dozens of hand-painted lines on the rounded Montecito shape. -231965b
