Description: We are offering the Twenty-First " Lei Day " Program, presented by the City and County of Honolulu, Hawaii. Held on April 30, 1949, at City Hall Grounds. (6" x 9"; 7 pages) Inserted loosely in the program is a list of Hawaiian words with their English translation, and a Hawaiin proverb translated into English. Apparently, this program belonged to an American tourist who had visited Hawaii and attended the Lei Day celebration. During this time, Hawaii was still a U.S. territory, not receiving statehood until 1959. The program included: the Coronation of Queen Lei; a Medley of Island Songs; the Singing of Hawaii's National Anthem accompanied by the Royal Hawaiian Band; Presentation of Leis from Old Hawaii, from the Missionary Period, from the Kamehameha Period, from "Our American" Shores, and from "Our Hawaiian" shores. Traditional dances were performed, and traditional songs were sung by both children and adults.
