Lower Saxony is a German state situated in northwestern Germany. It is the second largest state by land area and fourth largest in population among the sixteen German states. The federal states series consists of a total of 16 different €2 coins, each one bearing a unique symbol or building specific to the respective state. The series began in 2006 and a new coin is minted each year, in order of the rotating presidency of the Bundesrat (the upper house of the German parliament representing the federal states). The reverse of the coin features St Michael’s Church in Hildesheim, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and shown from its characteristic southern facade. The church’s layout is in the form of a Greek double cross with two transepts and two large towers over the east and west crossings. In the outer ring are the European stars as well as the year of issue. In the lower half of the outer ring is the country of issue, “Bundesrepublik Deutschland” or Federal Republic of Germany.
