Description: 2009 Statis ProAdvanced Baseball Cards/Complete Game The Phillies looked to repeat as world champions and nearly pulled the trick after acquiring the Indians' Cliff Lee and future hall of famer Pedro Martinez to solidify the rotation down the stretch. Offense was no problem as the Phightins led the league in runs behind Ryan Howard, Utley, Ibanez, and Werth who all slugged 30+ HRs. In spite of the historically terrible season turned in by closer Brad Lidge (0-8, 7.21) the Phillies got through the Rockies and Dodgers to the Series for the second straight year. The decade started with the Yankees beating the Mets in the 2000 World Series, and nine seasons later the Yankees had not added anymore hardware to the mantle. The Yankees spared no expense to go out of the decade, and into their new stadium, with another trophy. The Yanks spent an unprecedented amount of cash on free-agents C.C. Sabathia (19-8, 3.37), Mark Teixeira (.292 39 122), and A.J. Burnett (13-9, 4.04) to compliment an already potent team. The Yankees didn't disappoint, after slow start the Yankees finished up 103 wins and rolled over the crippled Twins, who finished the season 17-4 to force a playoff with the Tigers, and the powerful Angels to face off vs the Phillies. Despite the best efforts of Chase Utley (5HR 8RBI) the Yankees proved to be too much for the Phillies who took the Series 4-2 using the three man rotation of Sabathia, Pettitte, and Burnett. But the old line Yankees provided the fuel for the win with Andy Pettitte going 2-0, Mariano Rivera notching two saves, no runs, and Johnny Damon (.364 4 RBI), Derek Jeter (.407 5R), and Hideki Matsui (,615 3HR 8RBI) powering the offense and giving the Yankees their 27th world title.
