Description: 2007 ELYSIAN FIELDS QUARTERLY BASEBALL JOURNAL VOL. 24, NO. 3 Cover photo: Derek Jeter waiting on deck at Yankee Stadium, by Sally Mars (www.sallymars.com) Highlights: Don Dewey recalls the undying connection between Ebbets Field and Brooklyn Dodgers fans in "The Ebbets Community"; Frank Jackson remembers original New York Met, Jay Hook, who earned the team's first-ever victory in 1962; Anne Aronson covers the thriving women's game overseas ("Leveling the Playing Field: Women's Baseball in Australia"); and Michael Shurgot reminds us of the relentless power of baseball curses in "The Babe, the Goat, and the Seattle Mariners." Also, Tony Consiglio's "Batboy at the 1936 World Series," a photo essay of snapshots that include Hall of Famers Joe DiMaggio, Tony Lazzeri, Lou Gehrig, Carl Hubbell, Red Ruffing, Bill Terry, and Joe McCarthy; an interview with Memo Luna, who claimed that Eddie Stanky's hatred of Mexicans kept him from a major league career; Ernest "Bunny" Taliaferro, one of the all-time great schoolboy athletes to come out of Springfield, Massachusetts; Michael Carey's memories of Alaska's Griffin Park in the 1950s; and The Little Big Men, the Monterrey, Mexico youngsters who in 1957 became the first non-US team to capture the Little League World Series. Fiction: Markham Johnson's "First Game" (a quirky hurler with a tricky pitch up his sleeve) and "In Search of Native Secrets," the conclusion of the Portsider's three-part saga about the lost balls of baseball (or something like that). Poetry includes Eric Marks's "Casey at Der Bat," a hilarious version of the famous baseball poem; Laura LeHew's "Showing Thong"; Paul Felsch's "Scouting the Gentleman Killer" (Stan Musial); John Bargowski's "Derek Jeter Rookie Card"; and Daniel Bronson's "Oscar Charleston's Lament." Book reviews: Money Pitcher: Chief Bender and the Tragedy of Indian Assimilation; Branch Rickey: Baseball's Ferocious Gentleman; Spalding's World Tour; and Sal Maglie: Baseball's Demon Barber: Also, the All-Exemplary team, the EFQ Quotation Quiz, and much more! Volume 24, Number 3. Length: 112 pages. 6x9" format. Note: From 1992 through 2008, Elysian Fields Quarterly was the preeminent journal of baseball literature and culture--a beautiful 6x9 perfect-bound publication packed with articles, essays, poetry, fiction, book reviews, humor, fantasy lineups, quirky illustrations, and a great deal more. Like its predecessor, The Minneapolis Review of Baseball, EFQ featured contributors ranging from accomplished academics to first-time writers, and forged a special niche among readers that wasn't dependent on mainstream sportswriters or pundits to give it credibility. Although the publication went on hiatus in 2008, perhaps a comeback might still be around the corner. Issue is in new condition, leftover from unsold original inventory.
