The previous year, Madame de Sales or Boisy, mother of the Saint had prayed the Lord in the church Notre Dame de Liesse (Annecy ), in front of the Shroud, to ask to have a son whom she would devote to him.In 1591, St. Francis obtained his doctorate in law, but he will give up a probing career to become a priest in 1593.He left as a volunteer on a Chablais mission to Protestantism. Out of respect for the Protestants, he lodged at the castle of Allinges (remained Catholic) and after a few months, he went to celebrate Mass at Marin, near Thonon, in a Catholic country. Respectful of the freedom of conscience, he intervenes with the Duke of Savoy to preserve from exile those who do not convert. He will bear the title of bishop of Geneva ("the Rome of Calvin"), but he will reside in Annecy. He is "all to all", in the service of the little people like Henry IV who, several times, receives him at the Louvre and the castle of Annecy. With Senator Favre, father of grammarian Vaugelas, he founded the Académie Florimontane. He is the author of an important work that has marked French literature and the history of the Church. The "Doctor of Love", in "The Introduction to the Devout Life" and "The Treatise of the Love of God" insists on the Love of God and holiness for all.In the spirit of the Council of Trent, he is not a prince of the Church, but pastor of the most humble people. On the back of a mule, he traveled throughout his diocese (600 parishes) to the most remote villages. He declined the offer made to him to be coadjutor of the Cardinal of Paris.Always at the service of the little ones, at the end of his life, he spends an hour a day to welcome the poor to his bishopric. He died of a cerebral haemorrhage on December 28, 1622, at 55, in Lyon, in the house of the gardener of the Visitation of Bellecour.Francis will be declared a saint by the Church in 1665. Two centuries later, in 1877, he will be given the title of Doctor of the Church.Patron saint of writers. His tomb is in the basilica of the Visitation in Annecy. St Jeanne de ChantalBorn in Dijon in 1572, daughter of M. Fremyot, president of the Parliament of Burgundy, Jeanne receives a strong and deeply Christian education. At the age of 20, she married Baron de Rabutin-Chantal in Côte d'Or.In 8 years of marriage, she is the mother of 6 children. Two die at birth. Her eldest, Celse-Benigne, will become the father of Madame de Sevigne. In 1601, her husband died, victim of a hunting accident. It is a horrible ordeal: she is widowed at 28 with 4 children, the eldest is 5 years old and the youngest is 3 weeks old. From 1602 to 1610, she lived at the castle of Monthelon, near Autun, with her children, at the request of her father-in-law. In 1604, she met François de Sales, Lenten preacher in Dijon. He will be his guide and, little by little, will accompany him to give a new direction to his life.On March 29, 1610, after having assured the future of her children, her mother's heart shattered by emotion, she left everything to come to Annecy. On June 6, 1610, François de Sales presents a draft of the Rule to the first three Visitandines. From 1615 to 1641, she founded 87 monasteries. On horseback, in litter, she travels to found or visit new communities. She is close to the little ones. The people of Annecy venerate her. She also frequents the great of this world: Anne of Austria asks her to bless the Dauphin, the future Louis XIV.Like François de Sales, she died on a trip to Moulins in 1641. She is the patroness of all vocations. Her body rests next to that of François de Sales in the basilica of the Visitation in Annecy. It is at the monastery of the Visitation of Paray-le-Monial, that Christ, through her servant, St. Margaret Mary (1648-1690), will institute and spread the cult of His Sacred Heart.
