Description: Heavy cast brass, no damage. 7.75 inches in length. Late 19th century, Dutch. There are areas of dirt and paint on the front and sides so I was tempted to clean and polish it, but I decided to leave that up to the buyer. Incredible design of Hebrew words in high relief. The first part translates to: "G-d is my Protector, G-d is my shadow by my right hand. G-d will protect my goings and comings to life and to peace, forever" (Sefer Maharil, Lekutim 91, adapting Psalm 121:5). The second part states "Anyone who is meticulous regarding the commandment of mezuzah will have length of days, as it is written 'So that your days will be numerous' " (Tur Yoreh De'ah 285, referencing Deuteronomy 11:20). Sotheby's has been holding Judaica sales one to two times a year in New York City since 1949. I have every catalog of those sales going back to 1949, and only in the sale of November 1983 was an example of this mezuzah offered, as seen in the photo. That example was missing the little brass door that you can lift up so you can see the parchment, and the photographer took a picture of the mezuzah upside down.
