If the first tune heplays doesn’t rouse the reluctantearly-bird, his zany chatter does. (Thoseare Henry-isms in the above quotations).Let’s say you’re trying to get both eyesopen at the same time, your radio is onand Henry is doing a commercial. Well,Henry doesn’t just “do” a commercial. Onthis particular morning he is sellingelectric lawn mowers with all the verbalvigor of a turn-of-the-century pitchman. Then he slows his pace and lowers hisvoice to tell you, "Now, this is just for allyou people out there with electric grass.”and returns to his original salesman’sstacatto to finish the advertisement. Alittle later there’s a rapid fire ad lib tosome beef prices, “That’s no bull...now Iwouldn’t give you a bum steer.” Then hewarns his lady listeners not to takeadvantage of a sporting goods store’s saleon bow (beau?) hunting equipment. Youcan’t help waking up just to laugh, or atleast to chuckle. In any event, you’reawake!Henry’s ability to reach his greatlistening audience is due largely to thefact that he is personable, knowledgeable, and energetic, and able to transmit thesequalities on any frequency. His personable manner and his waywith words serve not only to amuse butactually to invite a kind of audienceparticipation. This household can attest tothat! I’m not one to talk to inanimateobjects, and I’m generally considered tohave my wits about me. However, I was“caught” in the pre-dawn hours talking tothe radio. “OK, Henry, that’s enoughabout the weather.” and “Thank you,Henry” after he has announced a ‘wake-uptune’. His ‘wake-up tunes’ include some ofthe liveliest bluegrass ever done, notably:The Country Gentlemen’s "Orange Blos-som Special” and Kenny Baker with JoeGreene playing “High Country.”Henry does not spin discs. He playsrecords. And tells his listeners aboutthem. That is to say that folks around thisarea don’t regard him as ‘just a DJ.’ Hetells interesting anecdotes about therecording artists, gives reliable informa-tion about the music, and even describesthe musical techniques employed onvarious instruments. He spends a greatdeal of time MC-ing country and bluegrassget-togethers around the state, playing amean flattop at some of these gatherings,or from time to time just being a part ofthe audience. He has also written recordjacket notes that further reflect hisknowledge of bluegrass music. It was because of Henry’s informativeradio programs that I turned to him tofurther my education in this form of musicthat had set my toes to tapping when Iwas a child growing up in Nashville,Tennessee. (In my later growing-up yearsthe hometown seemed to produce fewerand fewer of those toe-tapping sounds).Henry has long been a champion of thisdistillate of our rural music calledbluegrass. On December 1, 1956 hebrought not only his effervescentpersonality to WFLO’s air waves, hebrought his entire collection of recordedcountry music. A friend of mine recallshaving told Henry back in the ’50s, “You’llnever get ahead if you stick with thathillbilly music.” But despite several wellmeant recommendations of a similarnature, Henry has persevered inpromoting the kind of music he knows andloves the best. (For the last decade amainstay of this friend’s diet has been... 13997-AL-7803-34
