More than 400,000 Monte Carlos were produced in 1977 and they were lovingly used until the wheels fell off. Here's one that's survived and brings back all the good 70's vibes we know and love. Exterior Still single stage in 1977, Black paint makes this personal luxury car just a bit more luxurious. Black tends to hide the body lines here, which present as two astounding, swooping fender bulges that flow downward, as if being pushed back, like Fonzie's hair as it trails to a ducktail, shiny and black. A red pinstripe adds a flash of color and the vinyl roof surrounds the rear quarter window with amazing freshness and in a location that often suffers the first fates of time, this looks showroom fresh. The stacked headlights debuted in '76 and modernized the car from the single rounds that preceded them, and the eggcrate grille remains bold and familiar. Crested tail lights are also familiar old friends as millions of Montes wore them over the years and bookend the smooth lines of a decklid, latch panel, and contouring chrome bumper. 15-inch American Racing wheels are a nice addition here and add some complementary bling to the car's trim. The only imperfection we found was a small scuff down low. Interior Long door panels are super clean with a mix of formed plastic and stitch patterned vinyl inserts along with metal accents on the controls. Bench seats were still a popular option in '77 and here we have a split bench in black vinyl with elongated headrests, low profile by today's head restraint configurations. The stitch and button backed rear bench is in equally nice condition with clean, unblemished sidewalls. A touch of faux woodgrain accenting dresses up the simple steering wheel which frames the simple gauge cluster, also in plastic wood trim, and you get a speedometer, odometer, and gas gauge and other than some idiot lights, that's about it! In the center, you have a clock, A/C controls and an AM radio with matching wood centers on the knobs. The rest of the dash is showroom clean and the low pile black carpet has been kept nice with the use of mats and the headliner is picture perfect. Drivetrain A 305ci V8 lives under the hood and to it, a 4-barrel carburetor has been added. These were rated at 145 horsepower and the column shifter is attached to a TH350 3-speed automatic transmission sending power to the rear 10 bolt axle with 2.56 gears. Power brakes are onboard configured as front disc and rear drum. Undercarriage A clean underside confirms that regardless of mileage and age, it has been well cared for and stored right. There's minimal surface rust and only a few drops of oil in place including the pan, filter, and rear diff. The dual exhaust runs cleanly from headers through stainless steel mufflers and exiting discreetly before the rear bumper. Suspension consists of coil springs in front and a 4 link with coil springs in the back. Drive-Ability Our family car was a '77 Buick, so this environment is a familiar one and brings back favorable memories from the seventh grade. Meanwhile, the 305 comes to life eagerly and sets us on our journey where the car performs cleanly and well, providing a soft ride, acceleration that is good but not overwhelming, and solid braking in a cocoon like cabin that requires seat belts so not to feel like a slip and slide, (remember those days?). We have no complaints, and the functionality test checked all the boxes! While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase. An absolute time capsule from the same year Elvis officially left the building. These were as common as Camrys back in the day and many that have survived have been the subject of modification as great platforms for street rod type treatment. But this one survived unscathed and stands as a testament to a very nice design that was well received in the 70's, to understate it. Yes, we would not hesitate to put this in a museum of American automotive heritage, but we'd also love to see it at car shows.
